Work at THUAS

Are you a researcher with a strong background in image analysis? Are you well-versed in the latest developments in AI and capable of applying these to extract information from image data?

To expand our expertise and research capacity in image analysis with AI, we are looking for a researcher in 'Image Analysis with AI.'

Overview:

  • Department: Centre of Expertise Digital Operations & Finance
  • Location: Delft
  • Education Level: Bachelor/Master
  • Hours per Week: 24 hours (0.6 FTE)
  • Salary Range: Scale 11
  • Start Date: Negotiable in August or September 2024
  • Duration: 1 year

The Centre of Expertise Digital Operations & Finance at The Hague University of Applied Sciences focuses on three interrelated research themes: Future of Work, Responsible Business, and Data Driven Sustainability. As a researcher, you will work within the Data Driven Sustainability theme, analyzing various types of image data. This includes e.g. RGB images, possibly supplemented with additional depth information, or (hyper-) spectral images. You will identify the most suitable analysis methods and apply them.

Specifically, you will analyze spectral images for early detection of plant diseases and conduct pattern/object recognition in images for biodiversity measurements, crop and soil scans, navigation techniques, and other applications. You will identify the most suitable data analysis methods and adjust them as necessary to extract the desired information from the data. You will also consider the requirements for training data for the AI algorithms being used. Interest in and thinking along about other applications of image analysis, e.g. in combination with computer-vision for robots and other ways of object identification is a plus. You combine your substantive background with a social, enthusiastic attitude and can easily communicate with people from different backgrounds to meet their needs and requirements regarding image analysis for their specific application areas.

Data Driven Sustainability
Within Data Driven Sustainability, various research groups at the center of expertise conduct research on collecting, analyzing, and reporting data. On the one hand our expertise lies in developing, building, and applying sensors to measure the physical environment and analyzing this data using methods such as machine learning and object and pattern recognition. On the other hand we translate data into useful information for businesses, governments, and regulators. For example, business processes can be controlled in real-time based on sensor data, or data can be used for integrated reports and long-term value investment analyses.

Imaging instruments, such as (spectral) cameras, are frequently used as sensors. We use cameras to detect plant diseases in greenhouses, measure biodiversity in road verges, or identify materials in waste streams. They are also used in the (navigation of) autonomous vehicles, robots, cobots, and drones. Object and pattern recognition based on AI, particularly machine learning, play an increasingly important role here.

The information obtained from image analysis can be used to make business processes more sustainable, e.g. by timely intervention with biological pest control after detecting a plant disease or sorting materials for reuse. This aligns with the goal of the projects carried out at our Knowledge Center: enabling users to take action based on the collected data to prevent harmful impact or achieve positive (long-term) impact, thereby helping to make businesses more sustainable.
